It is very important to create this awareness about the spreading of Ebola virus in West Africa, its havoc and its possibility of spreading to other part of the world.  At present there are no drugs to cure it but series of preventive measures to keep it at bay.   The recent alarming rate of Ebola virus spread and continued increase in number of casualty and dead rate in West Africa calls for concern and this is what informed the reason behind the writing of this article to know how you can avoid contacting it.

Let us look at the origin of the disease, symptoms, how it can be spread and what to do to curtail it.

  1. ORIGIN OF EBOLA VIRUS

Ebola virus disease (EVD) formerly known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever is a severe condition caused by a virus from Filoviridave families known to be a disease that is transmitted from animal to human.  It first broke out in former Republic of Congo (now Zaire in 1976 where it killed 280 people (source: http://firstspost.com) and that’s where it derived its name from River Ebola.  Later in the same year there was its outbreak in Sudan; Ivory Cost in 1994 and Bundibugyo in Uganda in 2007. All these were able to put under control without causing any major threat as experiencing at present in West Africa.  Because in West Africa now it has reached a critical stage that is now receiving world attention.  For instance, the recent World Health Organization (WHO) reports say that average of 80% of the infected people of the virus die.  For the avoidance of doubt, see below the table on how it is affecting the West African countries since its outbreak.

Between June and now a total number of 4797 Ebola virus outbreak cases has been reported in West Africa of which 899 number of infected people have reported died and the number of might have been is on the increase.  As can be seen from the table above, the highest number is from Guinea 358, followed by Sierra Leone 273, Liberia 255 Nigeria 2 and Ghana 1.  That of Ghana happened yesterday, according to report. Their death is often resulted to a drop in the blood pressure and failure of organs of the infected person.  This is why you must be careful.  May God help us!

  1. HOW IT SPREAD!

Research Studies has been able to trace the virus to animals, monkeys and bats, an indication that it original infection must has been from animals. The present spread is from infected person to another through bodily fluids contact. Infection can also happen through air; if an infected person sneezes into air and inhaled by another person.  That person will be infected.

  2. HOW TO AVOID CONTACTING EBOLA VIRUS INFECTION

Avoid a situation where you will have bodily contact with other people as much as possible if possible. Though, it is totally impossible because we can have bodily contact in public places like public transport, markets and so on.  If that is situation we must ensure we take our bath regularly both in morning and evening when we return from work or other outing with clean water and antiseptic disinfectant and not salt water as being rumored in some quarters.  Also use clean white handkerchief to cover your nose regularly to prevent inhaling bacteria.  All this is necessary as there are not any vaccinations available as of now, so observation of basic hygiene is important. In addition other simple hygiene activities like washing of hands regularly, drinking water from clean sources and cooking meat well should be our watch word.

  3. SYMTOMS OF  EBOLA VIRUS

If you are down with any fever at all go to Doctor for proper diagnoses, don’t try self-medication as often witnessed in some African countries.  This may account for why we were having this epidemic of the disease in West Africa.  Because our people don’t tend or want to go to hospital when they are sick.  This is dangerous because you can know the cause and the gravity of the diseases.  This is why there is always need to see Doctor whenever anything is wrong with you! However, the symptoms may start with fever, weakness, muscle pains, headache and sore throats depending on your body chemistry.  It may take two to 21 days for infected person to know.  Others could be rash, red eyes, hiccups, chest pain difficulty in breathing and swallowing.  Gradually, it develops to vomiting diarrhea impaired kidney and liver function and sometimes internal and external bleeding.  As once said in this article, there is no cure yet for it therefore the only way is to apply the aforementioned preventive measure to stay alive.  May God Almighty spear our live (Amen)!
