Thus because of strong competition that has now surrounded the practice stringent measures such as application, test and interview have been introduced to elevate workers at work.  This is the reason why any worker that wants to stay long and advance in any work should bear in mind what I provided in this write up as essential ingredients of attracting promotion at work.

MAKE SURE YOU ARE DOING A GOOD JOB

Your present performance at work is important factor in quest for promotion.  It means that your performance should be above average before your recommendation for promotion is put forward.

BE A GOOD TEAM PLAYER

You should be ready to work line a team.  In some business organization, Committees are set up to handle ad hoc projects or assignments and you should be ready to work in the Committee whenever you are called upon to do so.  For example, in the administration of University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria the authority sets up committee of this nature to handle specific projects like examination misconduct committee, Housing Committee (for the welfare of staff) and so on.  Members of these committees are drawing from different units.  Thereafter their performance in these committees plays important roles in their consideration for promotion.

PUNCTUALITY AT WORK

Absenteeism, lateness at work and roaming about during the job hour can count against your promotion; because people are watching. They know dedicated worker and lazy ones.  This will be regarded as your general attitude to work and affect your desire for promotion.

UPDATE YOUR QUALIFICATION

Some companies provide in-training facilities for their workers.  Avail yourself with these opportunities to update your knowledge.  In addition if there is evening classes opportunity, go for it to advance your knowledge that will put you at advantage in the promotion exercise.

SOCIALIZATIONAND NETWORKING

Don’t shun company parties and gatherings.  Also if your company has staff club make sure you go there during lunch time to miss with other staff.  At times you will have time to discuss informal issues like promotion you cannot during the work hour.

DISCUSS WITH YOUR BOSS

It is always good to have discussed your promotion with your boss before applying.  This is important as he is likely to be one of your referees.  His input will count a lot.

GET LETTER OF REFERENCES

Course your boss and two other officers you have worked with to write favorable reference letters on your behalf.  Some workers ignore this and sometimes affect their promotions.

WATCH YOUR ATTITUDE WHEN YOUR APPLICATION IS NOT CONSIDERED

Watch your reaction to failed promotion exercise. Some staff is fond of castigating their colleagues and boss of being responsible for their failure.  Saying that is because their boss or particular person hate them that is why they fail them. Remember if you fail this one does not mean cannot pass next time.  Anybody you say bad thing against now will work against your interest in future.  Always be careful of what you say because your promotion is going to be for more responsible position and anybody who is going to hold that post should not be temperamental.
